Kerry Maiorca

Passionate about yoga, writing, movement, and creativity in general, Kerry is the Director of Bloom Yoga Studio and its Teacher Training Program. Kerry has completed over 700 hours of yoga teacher training, receiving certifications from Yoga Union of New York in 1998 and the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco in 2004, and she is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher at the 500-hour level through Yoga Alliance.

Having spent her childhood as an athlete, gymnast, and dancer, Kerry attended her first yoga class in New York in 1996, and she was hooked. She spent two years as a dedicated Ashtanga Yoga practitioner at Jivamukti Yoga School and at Ashtanga Yoga New York, then went on to study a blend of Ashtanga and Iyengar with Alison West of Yoga Union. In an effort to deepen her understanding of the practice, she also began an independent study of Sanskrit with scholar Christopher Hildebrandt.

After years of vigorous practice and a few too many injuries, Kerry sought out a gentler style of yoga that could help her sustain a state of health throughout her life. She immersed herself in the world of Iyengar Yoga and was continuously intrigued by the exploration of alignment and the subtleties of poses. This precision and specificity continues to inform her practice and teaching, though she empowers students to explore what healthy alignment means to them in each pose, in each moment.

Midway through her two-year training at IYISF, she and her husband Zach made plans to come home to Chicago. She began to daydream about an environment in which she could teach and grow over the years. She envisioned a yoga community that blended friendliness and professionalism, that was not only rooted in tradition but also accessible and unintimidating. Thus, the idea for Bloom was born and in November 2004 our community opened its doors.

Kerry enjoys exploring the individual nature of yoga and encourages students to make the practice their own. Her classes emphasize finding healthy alignment while holding poses, and exploring how the breath and body are affected by conscious movement. As a recovering past- and future-thinking junkie, she loves the way consistent yoga practice teaches us to live in the now so we may enjoy all of life's richness.
